ResumoAbstract This chapter reviews advanced analytical techniques developed and adapted for the study of photographic materials. Two examples of investigations into the degradation of photographic materials are given. Both make use of a wide range of spectroscopic techniques. Both investigations were aimed at understanding the fundamental mechanisms of degradation of photographic materials and were performed in different time periods and in different locations. The first is a study of the phenomenon called silver mirroring, a common degradation of black-and-white photographs. The second is a study of the fading of motion picture films in the collection of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
