These measurements show that the crystalline and high pressure amorphous phases are structurally distinct. We find that the transition mechanisms only require short-range atomic displacements, and that they seem to involve the discrete transformation of crystalline to amorphous material rather than a gradual disordering of the crystal. These results are consistent with previous observations of acoustic emissions during the amorphization of serpentine. References J. K. Böhkle, J. Honnorez, B. M. Honnorez-Guerstein, K.
