Resumo

In examining the history of libraries in relation to their cultural integration, we find two central records: they are places of the national heritage, as the political and technical configuration requires for it to be the reference for the State’s politics and the Society’s manifestation in its cultural demands; they are places for the preservation of the intellectual heritage because concentrate in its structure a historical culture and the ideas of a nation. The National Library because of the specificity of the Brazilian culture’s upbringing assumed a main role in the configuration of the national and the intellectual heritage, since it is responsible for the registration and custody of the Brazilian production literature (Law on Legal Deposit). Through this award legal, becomes one of providing tools for building the foundations of national culture.
