ResumoAbstract Carotenoids occurring predominantly or exclusively in animals are presented by means of the following representative endgroups: – 3-Hydroxy-4-keto-β-endgroup (including 3,4-dihydroxy-, 4-hydroxy- and 4-keto-endgroups). – 3-Hydroxy-2-nor-4-keto-β-endgroup. – 3-Hydroxy-6,8-diketo-κ-endgroup. – 3-Hydroxy-ɛ-endgroup. – Sporadic endgroups. Where possible, their stereochemistry and metabolic formation is discussed.
