Este trabalho apresenta um panorama da historia da conquista e da colonizacao do oeste estadunidense que se estende do seculo XVII ate o XXI. O levantamento perpassa as diferencas entre os varios periodos, onze estados e parte da diversidade humana. O faroeste – ou Far West – refere-se a um genero cinematografico e narrativo que em sua forma tradicional cobre apenas os acontecimentos do que hoje chamamos de “velho oeste”. A evolucao de fronteira para regiao e pos regiao, no entanto, esta registrada na literatura, na pintura, em filmes, bem como em inumeros ensaios que acompanham a integracao entre os europeus, as populacoes nativas, os imigrantes e as questoes de identidade que continuam a fomentar e ao mesmo tempo revisar os mitos e estereotipos da regiao que estabeleceu tantos tracos distintos da America no imaginario mundial. THE CULTURAL AND MYTHICAL WEALTH OF THE USAMERICAN WEST This article presents a wide view of the history of the conquest and colonization of the Usian west that begins in the 17th century and comes all the way to the 21st. It covers the differences among several periods, eleven states and part of the human diversity. The western refers to a cinematographic and narrative gender that in its traditional form addresses only what is now known as “the old west”. The evolution from frontier to region and postregion is plentifully registered in literature, painting and film, as well as in many essays that follow the integration of Europeans, Native populations and immigrants and the identity questions that continue to incite and at the same time revise the myths and stereotypes of the region which established many distinctive traits of America in the global imagination.
