PARA PENSAR UM NOVO MUNDO: a Geografia dos Jesuítas no Brasil

ResumoO objetivo principal deste artigo e mostrar que os jesuitas que estiveram no Brasil, durante os seculos XVI, XVII e XVIII, produziram obras de importante conteudo geografico que nao podem continuar desconhecidas ou desprezadas pelos geografos da atualidade, pois constituem importantes fontes para a geografia do Brasil ou, no minimo, para a historia dessa geografia. A fim de conhecer a origem e a riqueza de conteudo presentes nessas obras, decidimos partir para uma analise do conteudo de algumas delas, o que permitira a observacao de algumas pistas que auxiliarao os geografos da atualidade na compreensao dos textos jesuiticos, muitas vezes aparentemente dificeis, hermeticos ou mesmo fantasiosos e, talvez por isso, tanto tempo esquecidos pela geografia brasileira. ABSTRACT The fundamental aim of this paper is to show that the jesuits who were in Brazil during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries were able to produce works of important geographic contents which cannot go on being unknown or ignored by the present time geographers, for they constitute important sources for the geography of Brazil or, at least, for history of this geography. In order to know the origin and richness of contents which are present in these works, we have decided to start an analysis of contents of some of them, which will allow the comment on some hints which will help the present time geographers on the comprehension of the jesuitic texts, many times, apparently difficult, airtight or even imaginative and, perhaps due to this, forgotten by the brazilian geography for a long time.
