Trata, o artigo, da obra do poeta Teofilo Dias (1854 – 1889) que, expoente de sua geracao de escri-tores (a geracao de 1870), reelaborou representacoes artisticas (como as faunas e floras naturais do Brasil) toma-das do Romantismo para criar seus proprios ideais de civilizacao, progresso e republica. TEOFILO DIAS AND THE NATURE OF A MODERN BRASIL This article investigates the works of Teofilo Dias (1854 – 1889): the most important poet of his generation (the generation of 1870). Teofilo Dias recreated the artistic forms taken from the Brazilian Romantic-ism (such as the images of Brazilian flora and fauna). Understand this recreation process permit us to understand the way the poet composes his own ideals of civilization, progress and republic.
