Resumo

This chapter presents some numerical methods for hyperbolic partial differential equations. It also discusses Cauchy problems for hyperbolic systems in one space and more than one space dimensions. It then presents the solutions for the same. There are two important classes of hyperbolic systems: symmetric systems and strictly hyperbolic systems. Hyperbolic systems have two important properties: (1) finite speed of propagation and (2) discontinuities travelling along characteristics. The chapter also discusses the theory of pseudodifferential operators. The chapter further discusses the initial-boundary value problems for hyperbolic systems and presents a theory for difference approximations for the Cauchy problem. It also presents a theory for difference approximations for initial-boundary value problems.
