Resumo

The author describes his experience driving a Skoda Fabia Estate car equipped with intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) at the ITS World Congress in London, UK. The ISA-UK research project was conducted by the University of Leeds and MIRA Ltd. The vehicle used for the trial was selected because it had an electronic throttle with a signal that could be readily modified by ISA software. The vehicle featured a global positioning system and an in-vehicle digital road map with speed limit data. Once the vehicle is exceeding the speed limit along a road, the accelerator gently vibrates and the latest speed limit is shown onscreen. The system intervenes and gently brakes the car until the correct, legal speed is reached. There is a system override for the driver to use. (A)
