ResumoThe multi-institutional ARIES team has completed a series of four steady-state and two pulsed cost-optimized conceptual designs of commercial tokamak fusion power plants. The level of assumed advances in technology and physics was varied from one design to the next. The cost benefits of various design options are compared quantitatively with an emphasis placed on pulsed versus steady-state operation. Possible means to improve the economic competitiveness of fusion are suggested.
