Resumo

This article explores the psychoanalytic significance of the self-portraits of Egon Schiele and Frida Kahlo. Both artists employed the self-portrait as a central means of artistic expression. Their fanatic and prolific focus on artistic selfrepresentation exemplifies the manner in which they dealt creatively with narcissistic issues. The therapeutic function of the self-portrait as mirror is examined as well as the part it plays in self-consolidation and identity maintenance.
