ResumoAbstract Three new ignimbrite formations are described from the Matahana Basin, southwest of Rotorua, and are formally named the Pukerimu Ignimbrite, Tikorangi Ignimbrite, and Rahopaka Ignimbrite . All are older than 0.72 Ma. This is confirmed by fission track dating of zircons extracted from 2 of these ignimbrites and additional dates on younger horizons. The Tikorangi Ignimbrite is dated at 1.03 ± 0.18 Ma, Rahopaka Ignimbrite at 0.72 ± 0.16 Ma, Marshall Ignimbrite at 0.52 ± 0.14 Ma, and the Mamaku Ignimbrite at 0.14 ± 0.08 Ma.
