ResumoThis study had as objective to know the imaginary of the nurse along with the parents and relatives in the admittance of a newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As methodological procedure, a qualitative approach was used. The technique used for data compilation was a half-structuralized interview, carried out with 10 nurses of the neonatal intensive care unit of a Health Unit of São Gonçalo - Rio de Janeiro. The analysis of the study was performed according to the content analysis by Bardin. The statements expressed a technicist discourse peculiar to the biomedical model, with emphasis in the routines and technical procedures. The nurses showed emotional distress, suggesting a need of support to deal with the psychophysical difficulties on their workplace. They acknowledge the importance of welcoming the parents/families of newborns, as at the same time they come across with obstacles that are part of the institutional routines and other factors that make it difficult do accomplish such requirement.
