Este estudo propoe-se a analisar Relato de um certo Oriente sob o olhar da me-moria, buscando na fotografia, uma das tecnicas profundamente associadas a rememoracao, suporte para tal analise. Estuda-se como fotos assumem, nesse romance de Milton Hatoum, papel testemunhal, autenticador e agregador dentro do nucleo familiar e comunitario por que transitam as personagens do romance. Partindo de um breve resumo que, ao mesmo tempo em que apresenta o enredo do romance ressalta o papel da fotografia e do fotografo Dorner na narrativa, esta analise prossegue estudando detalhadamente as possibilidades da rememoracao a partir de acervo fotografico e, mais especificamente, como essas possibilidades se exercem atraves das fotos e do ato de fotografar em Relato de um certo oriente. Para tanto, resenham-se estudos desenvolvidos por Walter Benjamim, Roland Barthes, Jacques Le Goff e Pierre Bourdieu acerca da fotografia. A ―COLLECTION OF LIFE SURPRISES‖: PHOTOGRAPHY AND REMEMORATION IN RELATO DE UM CERTO ORIENTE This study proposes to examine the novel the perspective of memory construction, investigating how photography, one of the main techniques associated with remembrance, gives support to such analysis. Photos acquire testimonial, aggregative and authenticative function within the familiar and communal environment inhabited by the characters in the novel. Starting with a brief summary which both introduces the plot of the novel and emphasizes the role of photography and of the photographer Dorner in the narrative, this analysis proceeds by studying in detail the possibilities of remembrance provided by photography. Studies on photography, developed by Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Jacques Le Goff and Pierre Bourdieu are reviewed, so as to provide theoretical support to this analysis.
