ResumoYes, there is fossil evidence. That is the most surprising thing. The story the fossils tell is less surprising, because it is consistent with what one learns from living species by accepting the consensus about which are primitive and which are advanced (Sarnat and Netsky, 1974). There are a few other surprises, however, which may make this chapter worth reading.
