Resumo

Midtrimester abortion was successfully induced in 20 patients with a single intra-amniotic instillation of 40 mg. of prostaglandin F2α administered over a 10 minute period. Seventeen patients aborted completely and three aborted incompletely. The mean abortion time from the intra-amniotic instillation of the PGF2α to the abortion of the fetus was 16.24 hours. Uterine activity was present in all patients 20 to 30 minutes after the PGF2α instillation and activity continued with increasing amplitude of contractions and stable frequency of contractions throughout the abortion. Only two patients did not abort within 24 hours; they were, therefore, given an intravenous infusion of oxytocin and both aborted subsequently without complications. The side effects in this series were minimal and the average postabortion bleeding was approximately 150 to 200 ml. The mean abortion time and the outcome in this series of prostaglandin-induced midtrimester abortions compared favorably with the results of saline-induced abortions.
