ResumoThe central area for the distribution of Anguila anguilla (A. anguilla) is the British Isles and the coasts of the Bay of Biscay, judged from the mass occurrence of elvers ascending the rivers. This chapter examines the possible temperature effects on the number of vertebrae in Anguilla. A. marmorata has a geographical distribution right from S.E. Africa and Madagascar across the Indian Ocean to Indonesia and Taiwan, and farther in the Pacific to the Marquesas Is. Several species of Apodes breeding in the Sargasso Sea are discussed in the chapter. Nessorhamphus ingolfianus spawns in the Sargasso Sea at the same period as the Eel— that is, in spring and early summer, somewhat later in the east than in the west, and the metamorphosis of the larva takes place especially in the months of August, September, and October. As in the case of Nessorhamphus, the biology of the adults does not induce segregation into a western and an eastern population.
