Two days after the assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri, a huge crowd soon occupied the Martyrs' Square in downtown Beirut calling for the immediate withdrawal of Syrian troops and the resignation of the Lebanese government. 2 Foreign ministers of France, Iran, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Syria and the EU foreign policy representative Javier Solana attended the ceremony. 3 AMAL is a predominantly Shiite political movement that is headed by the current House Speaker in Parliament Nabih Berri.
