Resumo

This chapter discusses the applications of ceramic membranes in liquid filtration. The number of applications of ceramic membranes is immense and ever increasing. The advantages of ceramic membranes include chemical and thermal stability, narrow pore size distribution, high porosity, high flux, mechanical strength (enabling back flushing), microbiological resistance, and long lifetime. The application of a technology is governed by its costs versus its benefits. The economical place of any separation process then depends on the type and value of the materials to be treated. The ceramic membranes help in the treatment of wastes of oily emulsions and wastes based on semi-solids. In certain cases, the category wastes coincides with the category regeneration. The regeneration can be achieved by the recycling of solids from suspensions, lifetime extension of cleaning baths, and recycling in chemical processes. Ceramic membranes also help in the processing of the waste by the treatment of liquid products and semi-solid products.
