Resumo

The dispute about paradigms for evaluating debates has focused on the choice of a real world activity as an appropriate model for debate. This essay argues that debate judges should not borrow a paradigm from another activity, but should build a paradigm that meets the unique needs of debate. The essay first identifies the purpose of debate and the characteristics that a paradigm must possess to fulfill that purpose. From that analysis follows a functional view of the debate judge as simply a “debate judge.”
