Resumo

In the Alto Paranaiba region of western Minas Gerais, Cretaceous sedimentary deposits, influenced by volcanic activities during several phases of their deposition, can be divided into four geological formations. The Areado Formation is the most important among them, being studied here in relation to its depositional environment. The sediments of this formation are essentially fluvial and different deposits associated with flood plain and channel sub-environments have been recognized. The influence of alkaline volcanism and associated seismic activities upon the Areado Formation sediments is also described.
