ResumoPublisher Summary This chapter deals with those materials whose knowledge and understanding is vital for an engineer. It emphasizes that knowledge of the properties of a material is essential to every engineer. This enables suitable material choice for a particular application, appropriate design of the components or parts, and their protection. It defines various terms that are used to describe the behavior of a material under various conditions of loading. Several tests are performed on materials in order to quantify their properties and determine their suitability for various engineering applications. A brief description of these tests is incorporated here. Another important issue that is very useful for an engineer is the knowledge of the manufacturing process and properties of iron and steel. Additionally, the chapter provides a concise explanation of some of the more common metals met in engineering. The various properties, composition and uses of some common engineering materials are also given in a table format. Finally, it is essential for an engineer to learn the art of slowing down of the material wastage. Thus, the last section provides information on corrosion, which is the wasting of metals by chemical or electrochemical reactions with their surroundings.
