ResumoThis article aims to draw a profile of the foundation of the Institute of History and Geography of Maranhao in 1925, taking into account the desideratum to preserve, enhance and revitalize that which the members considered as a large quantity of state heritage assets, whether tangible or intangible. Not to forget, what we consider Maranhao’s greatest tradition, its past, regarded as rich in history and remarkable for its literary and intellectual talents. Thus, the Institute has put itself in the position of interpreter or guardian of the past, capturing memories, observing the relationships established among the realms of power. Even, at times, stimulating, emulating and inciting the state to practice public policies towards perpetuating an image of Maranhao they would not care to modify.
