ResumoMycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome are the most frequent cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, Their aetiology and pathogenesis are almost unknown as well as the mechanisms by which early indolent stages progress into a more aggressive behaviour developing tumours and spreading to lymph nodes and internal organs. We review the factors implicated in its development and evolution: inheritance, environmental exposures, infectious agents, major histocompatibility antigens, genetic instability, cytokines and oncogenes. Although the development of advanced laboratory techniques has greatly enhanced our understanding of their etiopathogenesis, the significance of many implicated mechanisms is controversial and a matter of debate. New researches, based in the epidemiology and molecular biology will he necessary in order to resolve these questions and enhance the understanding of the disease.
