These observations have led us to suggest that a voided volume of 150ml. be used as the minimum acceptable volume for studies of male subjects in which peak flow is used to define normal versus abnormal voiding. At volumes greater than 150ml. a straight line describes the relationship between volume voided and peak flow as accurately as the previously suggested hyperbolic curve. Increasing age of men again reveals progressive decrease in peak flow rate no matter what volume is voided. Comparison of peak flow rate, volume voided and age by 3-dimensional graphing was attempted but was found unsuccessful for clinical use. However, 3 biaxial linear graphs may be used to chart effectively the 3 parameters (age, volume and peak flow) and thereby judge normality or abnormality of peak flow rate for any age and volume voided. © 1979 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byRoehrborn C, Chapple C, Oelke M, Cox D, Esler A and Viktrup L (2018) Effects of Tadalafil Once Daily on Maximum Urinary Flow Rate in Men with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Suggestive of Benign Prostatic HyperplasiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 191, NO. 4, (1045-1050), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2014.PERNKOPF D, PLAS E, LANG T, DAHA K, KUBIN K, TREU T and PFLÜGER H (2018) UROFLOW NOMOGRAM FOR MALE ADOLESCENTSJournal of Urology, VOL. 174, NO. 4 Part 1, (1436-1439), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2005.Gormley G, Stoner E, Bruskewitz R, Imperato-McGinley J, Walsh P, McConnell J, Andriole G, Geller J, Bracken B, Tenover J, Darracott Vaughan E, Pappas F, Taylor A, Binkowitz B and Ng J (2018) The effect of finasteride in men with benign prostatic hyperplasiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 167, NO. 2 Part 2, (1102-1107), Online publication date: 1-Feb-2002.GROUTZ A, BLAIVAS J and SASSONE A (2018) DETRUSOR PRESSURE UROFLOWMETRY STUDIES IN WOMEN: EFFECT OF A 7FR TRANSURETHRAL CATHETERJournal of Urology, VOL. 164, NO. 1, (109-114), Online publication date: 1-Jul-2000.WYNDAELE J (2018) NORMALITY IN URODYNAMICS STUDIED IN HEALTHY ADULTSJournal of Urology, VOL. 161, NO. 3, (899-902), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1999.JEPSEN J, LEVERSON G and BRUSKEWITZ R (2018) VARIABILITY IN URINARY FLOW RATE AND PROSTATE VOLUME: AN INVESTIGATION USING THE PLACEBO ARM OF A DRUG TRIALJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 5, (1689-1694), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1998.Tammela T and Kontturi M (2018) Long-term Effects of Finasteride on Invasive Urodynamics and Symptoms in Treatment of Patients with Bladder Outflow Obstruction Due to Benign Prostatic HyperplasiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 154, NO. 4, (1466-1469), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1995.Nishimoto T, Latifpour J, Wheeler M, Yoshida M and Weiss R (2018) Age-dependent Alterations in beta-adrenergic Responsiveness of Rat Detrusor Smooth MuscleJournal of Urology, VOL. 153, NO. 5, (1701-1705), Online publication date: 1-May-1995.Munro D and Wendt I (2018) Contractile and Metabolic Properties of Longitudinal Smooth Muscle from Rat Urinary Bladder and the Effects of AgingJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 2 Part 1, (529-536), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1993.Girman C, Panser L, Chute C, Oesterling J, Barrett D, Chen C, Arrighi H, Guess H and Lieber M (2018) Natural History of Prostatism: Urinary Flow Rates in A Community-Based StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 3, (887-892), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1993.Grino P, Bruskewitz R, Blaivas J, Siroky M, Andersen J, Cook T and Stoner E (2018) Maximum Urinary Flow Rate by Uroflowmetry: Automatic or Visual InterpretationJournal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 2, (339-341), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1993.Golomb J, Lindner A, Siegel Y and Korczak D (2018) Variability and Circadian Changes in Home Uroflowmetry in Patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Compared to Normal ControlsJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 4, (1044-1047), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1992.Mebust W (2018) Editorial CommentsJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 4, (1047-1047), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1992.Stoner E (2018) The Clinical Effects of a 5α-Reductase Inhibitor, Finasteride, on Benign Prostatic HyperplasiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 5, (1298-1302), Online publication date: 1-May-1992.Nanninga J (2018) Editorial CommentsJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 4, (1047-1047), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1992.Schoenberg H (2018) Editorial CommentsJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 4, (1047-1047), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1992.Thind P, Gerstenberg T and Bilde T (2018) Is Micturition Disorder a Pathogenic Factor in Acute Epididymitis?
