ResumoWe begin by sketching a short history of the settlement of the Monastery of the Regular Canons of the Monastery of Santa Cruz in the city of Coimbra and the action they carried out, both by providing spiritual support to the community and by assisting the deprived population through the creation of an hospital which sought to help not only the sick, but also those lacking comfort and protection. We look into this action in context by characterizing the national situation led by the Church and fostered by royal protection which we illustrate through a few examples. We give notice of the small collection of books which belonged to the pharmacy referred to before (all pertaining to medical topics and dealing with the correct manipulation of drugs) which have surprisingly survived to this day, especially when one considers the vicissitudes they have been exposed to in the course of several centuries of neglect. We will present some information on this collection and provide an overview of the most renowned authors ant the most rare editions.
