ResumoAbstract Previous works indicated that in a chain folded system cross‐links induced by radiation can not be randomly distributed but are likely to be concentrated in the region of the folds. This issue has now been reopened by a new approach involving selective oxidative degradation of the irradiated crystals and subsequent analysis of the length distribution of the resulting chain fragments by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). It is demonstrated that the situation where the cross‐links are preferentially near the fold surface should be clearly distinguishable from a random cross‐link distribution. The preliminary studies indicate strong preference of cross‐linking in the fold region by this test in support of earlier conclusions reached from solubility (gel content) measurements.
