The Flag and the Crowd, Two National Symbols Since the final stage of nationalisms' development in late 19th century and throughout the 20th century, the national flag and the crowd have functioned as twin symbols in national symbology. This paper addresses the coincidence of iconographic representation of these two symbols in a significant set of works, namely in western painting tradition from Delacroix's works onwards. We conclude that both the abstract flag and the concrete crowd are substitute representations of the national community, confirming Durkheim's reflections about the connection of the totem and emblem as “principles” representing it, and we argue whether the consideration of ephemeral crowd should not be rebalanced in face of the persistance and perenniality of its representations.
