A biologia sintetica desafia a cultura contemporânea com produtos que unem o artificial ao natural, o inorgânico ao orgânico, o nao vivente ao vivente, questionando frequentemente os limites das classicas categorias que distinguiam um modo de ser do outro. Tal desafio se faz inclusive presente em alguns interpretes de Tomas de Aquino, que julgam sua metafisica da substância e dos artefatos como incapaz de interpretar validamente os produtos da ciencia e da tecnologia humana. Reavaliar as categorias metafisicas de Tomas de Aquino como aptas para a interpretacao do estatuto ontologico dos produtos da biologia sintetica, em particular da celula sintetica, e o principal objetivo a ser aqui alcancado. Synthetic biology and categories of classical metaphysics Abstract Synthetic biology challenge the contemporary culture with products that aims to synthesize nature with artifacts, inorganic with organic, non-living with living beings, often questioning the boundaries of traditional categories that distinguish one mode of being from another. This challenge is made also present in some interpreters of Aquinas, who judge his metaphysics of substance and artifacts as unable to properly understand the products of science and human technology. Reassessing the metaphysical categories of Thomas Aquinas as suitable for the interpretation of the ontological status of the products of synthetic biology, in particular the synthetic cell, is the main aim to be achieved in this paper.
