LEVINE, HAROLD G. LEVINESearch for more papers by this author First published: Spring 1982 https://doi.org/10.1525/eth.1982.10.1.02a00040 HAROLD G. LEVINE is Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Fieldwork among the Kafe was undertaken between June 1971 and January 1973. A grant from the National Science Foundation (GS 3140) and two grants from the Department of Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania, made this research possible. An initial draft of this paper was presented at a symposium entitled “Curing in Oceania” held at the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania, Charleston, South Carolina, February 26, 1976. I wish to thank the participants in the Symposium, particularly Adell Johannes and Roger Ward, for their comments on the paper. In addition I wish to express particular gratitude to Ronald Gallimore and William Redd for their aid in helping me conceptualize the argument put forth here; and I profited from further discussions with L. L. Langness and Jim Turner. Langness, Michael Diamond, Elizabeth Faithorn, Jill Korbin, Cecile Mairesse, John Kennedy and William Redd read through the manuscript and offered valuable suggestions.
