Diatoms and Algae Research

The taxonomic survey of the desmids (Zygnemaphyceae) of the rivers in the area of the Hydroelectric Power Plant in Salto Caxias, in the State of Parana, Brazil, was carried out by monthly collections at 15 sampling stations, from February, 1997 to February, 1998. Twenty taxa with 19 species, including 11 typical varieties, 6 non-typical varieties of their respective species, and 2 taxonomic forms were identified. Out of these, 13 taxa (65%) are cited for the first time in the State of Parana: C. bireme var. huzelli, C. commissurale, C. formosulum var. formosulum, C. impressulum var. impressulum, C. laeve var. laeve, C. margaritatum var. margaritatum f. minor, C. phaseolus var. elevatum, C. porrectum, C. pseudowenbaerense, C. quadrifarium var. quadrifarium, C. quinarium var. brasiliense, C. subspeciosum var. subspeciosum f. brasiliense e C. subspeciosum var. validius.
