Resumo

In this paper a new approach to the stability analysis of large scale power systems using Vector Lyapunov functions is introduced. By decomposing the composite power system into a number of low order subsystems, Lyapunov functions for these subsystems are constructed in the usual way. These scalar Lyapunov functions are then used as components of a vector Lyapunov function for the composite system. Using this function together with the stability properties of the individual subsystems and the nature of interactions between the subsystems criteria for the stability of the overall system are derived. Such an approach of piecewise analysis provides an attractive alternative to the methods employing stability criteria of multinonlinear systems to power system problems. It is also possible with this technique to investigate the stability of the system due to structural changes in the system. The procedure is illustrated for a 3 machine power system.
