Resumo

This article places the development of tourism in Bakau, The Gambia, within the general context of social and economic changes in the town. It focuses on the activities of beachboys in Bakau who assume the role of culture brokers, acting as mediators and innovators in the community. It then studies the ambivalent reaction of Bakau elders to the beachboys' activities.
