Resumo

Studies on the prevalence of respiratory tract pathogens colonizing the nasopharyngeal flora of children attending day-care centers (DCCs) have been reported in a number of recent publications. Attending day care was shown to be a risk factor for the carriage of antibiotic-resistant strains of pneumococci [1], an observation most likely related to the frequent use of antibiotics in upper respiratory tract infections of children in this age group and also to other epidemiologic features unique to the day-care setting (behavior, immaturity of immune system, etc.).
