ResumoOn October 27, 2002, in the second round of the election for the presidency of the [Federative] Republic [of Brazil], the Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores [PT]) candidate, former metalworker and former union leader Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, received 52,793,364 votes (61.27 percent of the valid votes, not including blank and void ballots), defeating the progovernment candidate of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira [PSDB]), senator, economist, and former Minister of Health Jose Serra.
