Resumo

The bursting of drops by forces applied over their surface has been the subject of many experimental researches and slight deviations from the spherical form have been investigated by linearised equations. In two cases experiments have shown that in the final stage the drop appears to develop conical ends, but no rational description of this phase of the disruptive process seems to have been published. These two cases are (I) when the drop is torn apart by an electric field and (II) when a drop of fluid of small viscosity exists in a fluid of much greater viscosity which is extending in one direction with a uniform rate of strain. Analytical difficulties have prevented me from presenting more than a partial treatment in either case, but even so they may lead to a better understanding of the mechanics and physics of the breakdown of free surfaces.
