ResumoSet up as a cooperative program in 1980 by the United Nations Environment Programme, the International Labour Organization, and the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) was established to provide the basis for scientific health and environmental risk assessment for safe use of chemicals (normative functions) and to strengthen national capabilities for chemical safety (technical cooperation). Assessments for different target audiences as well as methodologies for evaluation of chemical hazards and risks are issued in a range of peer-reviewed documents. Technical support is provided to the countries for the establishment of facilities for the prevention and management of poisonings and chemical emergencies, including guidance documents, multilingual information management tools, and training. Harmonization of risk assessment methods and international data comparability are promoted, as well as health sector engagement in international chemical instruments. IPCS outputs are provided in hard copy and electronically and are contributions to the Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals.
