SUMMARY _ An examination was made of the feasibility of using common, simple tests to detect the contribu tion to obstructive lung disease of diminished lung elastic recoil. Measurements of maximal expira tory flow, respiratory resistance, and functional residual capacity were compared with measured lung recoil pressure at the same volume. The failure of indirect indices of lung recoil can be ex plained primarily by the fact that ordinary measurements of respiratory resistance do not define the pertinent resistance determining the relationship between maximal expiratory flow and elastic recoil pressure.
