ResumoFrom April 1984 to October 1985 SO 2- 4 , NO - 3 , NH - 4 , Na = and CI - concentrations were measured in both rain and river water in the Quilombo River Valley, Cubatao region (Sao Paulo State - Brazil), in order to establish a general budget of these ions in that catchment. The results obtained were interpreted as a function of natural and anthropogenic contributions. Ion balances for Na + and NO - 3 only showed that total input (dry + wet deposition) is lower than total output in river water, that is a positive balance. Ion balances were negative for SO 2- 4 and Cl - , and Cl - /SO 2- 4 in river waters ratio is greater than one. A lab experience of lixiviation of Cubatao soils showed that SO 2- 4 and Cl - are absorbed by them. Thus absorption, followed by retention in the mangrove, .also explains the low level concentration of these ions in the Quilombo River waters, although its input in the Quilombo Valley through the atmosphere is very high.
