ResumoAbstract Benzophenone is produced in the photocatalytic oxidation of diphenylmethane in an oxygen saturated TiO 2 suspension. The yield is found to increase with increasing solvent polarity. An electron transfer mechanism is proposed in which a pair of electron‐positive holes generated initially by illumination may transfer an electron to O 2 and abstract an electron from diphenylmethane to form O 2 − and ϕ 2 CH 2 + ; subsequently, ϕ 2 CH 2 + will react with O 2 − to give the product.
