ResumoThrough the centuries, contributions from different people to the art of healing have made up the history of universal medicine. The study of the origins and development of medical knowledge drew attention to important contributions made by Brazilians in the medical field. The aim of this study was to highlight the Brazilian contribution to the discovery of the filariasis etiologic agent. Names such as Otto Wucherer, Paterson and Silva Lima, who created and encouraged the model of an investigative medical school named Bahia Tropical School during the beginning of the Brazilian empire, must be given their due recognition.
