ResumoAbstract A kinetic study on the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of water and oligomeric polyvinyl alcohol was made. The reaction proceeds by a radical mechanism and the rate of polymerization is described by the equation: R = k[PVA] 1/2 [M]. The over all activation energy of the initiation was estimated as 31.3 kcal/mole. A reaction mechanism is proposed. It is interesting to note that the mechanism resembles to that of cyclodextrin catalysis as a model of enzyme reaction.
