ResumoMammary gland infections may be caused by several pathogens, the most common are Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. The aim of the present report is to describe one case of necrotizing mastitis involving those agents in a post-partum bitch, emphasizing both diagnosis and evolution after therapy. At the moment of the first consult, the animal was cachectic, dehydrated, apathetic and presented elevated body temperature. Multiple mammary glands presented marked milk secretion, edema, increased local temperature and some evident areas of blue skin. Empiric antimicrobial therapy with ceftriaxone was initiated. Five days later, necrotic tissue was lost and mammary glands presented extensive ulceration. Staphylococcus and β-hemolytic Streptococcus were isolated. Topic therapy with 10% glycerinated iodine and chlorhexidine gluconate ointment was added to antimicrobial therapy and this management was proven efficient in this case. Clinical presentation was reversed and a perfect tissue recovery was observed.
