Zusammenfassung Mit licht‐ und elektronenoptischen Methoden werden in der vorliegenden Mitteilung einleitend die einzelnen Schichten und Zelltypen des Pansenepithels eingehend charakterisiert. Feinstrukturelle Einzelheiten des Cytoplasmas und der Interzellularsubstanz im Bereich der oberen Körnerzellen und der Hornzellen vom Typ A weisen auf eine hier gebildete bzw. gelegene Barriere gegenüber schädigenden Einflüssen des Panseninhaltes hin. Zahlreiche gut darstellbare Haftstellen (Desmosomen und Hemidesmosomen) im gesamten Epithelverband sowie Besonderheiten in den Interzellularräumen der unteren Epithelschichten werden als bedeutsame Einrichtungen im Dienste eines transepithelialen Stofftransportes gewertet. Weitere morphologische Befunde sind unter Betonung ihrer funktionellen Bedeutung in einer Schluβbetrachtung zusammengefaβt. Summary The microstructure of the epithelium of the rumen of the goat and ox Using light‐ and electron‐microscopy, the various layers and cell types of the rumen epithelium are described in detail. The fine structural details of the cytoplasm and of the intercellular substance in the neighbourhood of the upper granular cells and the horn cells of type A suggest the formation and intervention of a barrier protecting the epithelium against noxious agents in the rumen contents. Numerous clearly‐defined points of contact (desmosomes and hemidesmosomes) are present throughout the whole epithelium layer, as well as special features within the intercellular spaces of the lower epithelial layers, and these are seen as significant structures serving in the trans‐epithelial transport of materials. Further morphological findings and their functional significance are collected together in the conclusions to the paper. Résumé La structure fine de l'épiähélium du rumen de la chèvre et du boeuf Dans la présente communication sont décrits de manière détaillée les diverses couches et types cellulaires de l'épithélium du rumen, observés à l'aide des techniques optiques usuelles et du microscope électronique. Les détails de la structure fine du cytoplasme et de la substance intercellulaire dans la région des cellules granuleuses supérieures et des cellules cornées du type A indiquent la formation resp. l'intervention d'une barrière contre l'action nocive du contenu du rumen. De nombreux points de contact bien définissables du tissu épithélial (desmosomes et hémidesmosomes), de même que des particularités dans les espaces intercellulaires des couches épithéliales inférieures sont considérés comme des mécanismes significatifs pour le tranport transépithélial de substances. Dans les conclusions sont résumées d'autres observations morphologiques, avec indication de leur signification fonctionnelle. Resumen La microestructura del epitelio de la panza de la cabra y vaca Con técnicas foto y electrónicoópticas se caracterizan en detalle, en la comunicación presente, como introducción, las distintas capas y tipos celulares del epitelio ruminal. Detalles microestructurales del citoplasma y de la substancia intercelular en el margen de las células granulosas superiores y de las células cörneas del tipo A aluden a una barrera aquí formada o situada frente a los influjos nocivos del contenido de la panza. Numerosos lugares sustentadores (desmosomas y hemidesmosomas) en todo el complejo epitelial, así como particularidades en los espacios intercelulares de las capas epiteliales inferiores se clasifican como dispositivos significativos al servicio de un transporte substancial transepitelial. Otros hallazgos morfológicos se recopilan en una consideración final bajo recalcadura de su significado funcional.
