ResumoSummary The Author initiated some time ago the study of the flora and vegetation of the Valsesia (Piemonte) and is continuing this work accordin the program sketched at the beginning of the present paper. The purpose of these investigation is to present a floristic study of the less well-known valleys of the Valsesian region, of the massif of Mt. Rosa, of Mt. Fenèra, etc. and also to present palynologic research of the quaternary deposits. Included here is a review of a part of the work of the Abbé Carestia, one of the most assiduous researchers of the Valsesian flora. The Abbé Antonio Carestia, born in 1825 and died in 1908 at Riva Valdobbia (Vercelli), had contact and conferences with some of the most noted botanists of his time and for many years collected plants of the Valsesia and adjacent valleys. He concerned himself with the phanerogamic and cryptogamic flora, but is best known owing to publication, for is collections lichens, mosses and liverworts. There is no published work concerned with the phanerogams and vascular cryptogams with exception of a species list, prepared by Carestia for publication by the Italian Alpine Club (Varallo Sesia Section). The collection of the Abbé Carestia left at his death, are conserved in large part in the Herbarium of the Botanical Institute of the University of Turin; one minor collection, but containing many species, is at Varallo Sesia in the Calderini Museum. The catalogue of the Carestia collections included in this papers, limited to the Valsesian region and to the Phanerogams and Vascular Cryptogams, comprises more than 1000 «taxa». It is no complete because, owing to excange of specimens, the collections of Carestia are found in many Herbaria, Italian and foreign; however, it constitutes a large number of species and is a strong nucleus for what could be considered a Flora od Valsesia. The Author has listed the localitys of the collection, giving the altitude and has made reference to the places in wich may be found the researches of Carestia.
