ResumoHEPATOGENOUS PHOTOSENSITIZATION IN GOATS ASSOCIATED WITH BRACHIARIA BRIZANTHA INGESTION IN PARA This study investigates two isolated cases of photosensitization in goats in Para. Goat number 1 was kept in a confined system in a suspended wooden stall, and was exclusively fed breast milk, salt and mineral water ad libitum up to 30 days of age. Then, it was introduced in Brachiaria brizantha pastures, and after 15 days, it showed clinical signs of photosensitization. Goat number 2 was originally kept in B. brizantha pastures. Five months after arriving at another farm, which also presented pastures of the same type, the animal fell ill. Clinical signs included apathy, anorexia, ear edema, icterus, restlessness, seeks shade, and shedding of skin followed by crust formation in some areas of the body. Furthermore, increased levels of GGT, AST and bilirubin were observed. Analysis of B. brizantha samples revealed protodioscin isomers. Necropsy findings reported subcutaneous edema, jaundice, and orange color liver. Histological examination detected liver damage due to hepatocellular swelling and cholestasis with foam cell and crystal formation. It also evidenced dark brown renal tubules, tubular degeneration, and the presence of crystals.
