Ao se completarem 60 anos da criacao do Estado de Israel, uma reflexao sobre a situacao dos judeus israelenses e os judeus da dispersao coloca em pauta a necessidade de uma “decisao consciente” quanto ao futuro do povo e do Estado judaicos. E uma questao que abrange varios aspectos, como o da legalidade politica e etica do sionismo moderno, os desafios provocados pela ascensao do islamismo radical, os atentados e as ameacas a Israel e aos judeus de todo o mundo, vindos do Ira e de grupos extremistas, as dificuldades para o estabelecimento de um Estado palestino. Em sintese, sao decisivos para o futuro de Israel e do povo judeu tanto a solucao do conflito com o povo palestino – que coloca a questao de como chegar a paz sem comprometer a seguranca – e com o mundo arabe, como o proprio modelo da existencia de Israel e do comportamento do povo judeu, dentro e fora de Israel, como um so povo, o povo unico que ele foi e tem sido ao longo de sua historia. Israel and the Jewish people in the 21st century: the challenge of a conscious decision - Abstract: After 60 years of the creation of the State of Israel, a reflection about the situation of Israeli and disperse jews puts into question the need of a “conscientious decision” about the future of both the Jewish people and the Jewish State. It is a question with many aspects, such as the politic legality and ethics of the modern Zionism; the challenges offered by the rising of the radical Islamism; the terrorist attacks and menaces to Israel and to the jews of all the world, from Iran and from extremist groups; the difficulties for establishing a Palestinian State. In short, two questions are decisive for the future of Israel: one is the solution of the conflict with both the Palestinians – that brings the question of how to reach peace without compromising security – and with the Arab world; the second is the model of Israeli existence and the Jewish people’s behavior, within and outside Israel, as a single people, the only people that it was and has been through its history.
