Resumo

Abstract The suggestion that more power can be obtained from a genome scan by consideration of “peak width” in addition to “peak height” has been controversial. Regarding this question from the viewpoint of smoothing, one finds that to the extent that smoothing increases the informativeness of individual markers it is possible to obtain increased power; but for markers that are fully informative the value of smoothing is questionable.
