Resumo

A journal's impact factor, once a little-known tool used by librarians to choose subscriptions for their collections, has developed a power and mystique that rivals the college rankings published annually by U.S. News and World Report. Like university administrators who deride the importance of the rankings and challenge the factors used to calculate them, journal editors acknowledge the importance of impact factor rankings but are wary about overemphasizing them or acknowledging their potential influence on editorial decisions.
