Resumo

The oxidation of 4,8-dihydroxy-2,6-dioxabicyclo (3.3.0) octane [1R,4S,5R,8R] -or isosorbide- results in monoketone : 4-hydroxy-2,6-dioxabicyclo (3.3.0) octan-8-one [1S,4S,5R]. This reaction takes place in an aqueous acid solution, with a stream of oxygen and in the presence of a platinum on carbon catalyst. A fractional factorial design is used to determine the major parameters that influence the oxidation of isosorbide. The effect of the different parameters is analyzed and a technique for optimization of the reaction is suggested. A reaction scheme discussed which takes into account the experimental results and the molecular structure of the isosorbide molecule, as well as the influence of the pH on the rate of the reaction.
